About Our Museum
The Centenary Cottage Museum was originally intended to be a house museum, opened in 1971 depicting various furnished rooms of a Victorian house. However over the years, the museum has evolved into a more extensive museum with the two house dwellings being first, a Victorian house and second, Petrie Cottage being a typical 1860-1930s workman's cottage.
Together with the two house displays, the museum now has a gallery depicting many wartime artefacts, exhibits from Dr Alexander Watts, James Francis Thomas (the Tenterfield lawyer who represented Breaker Morant) as well as an area exhibiting outdoor machinery, various dairy industry exhibits and another shed that houses many old tools and relics from a bygone era. The museum also has art collections from Lillian Chauvel and Ted Hoskins.
Exhibits
The museum basically consists of exhibits from Tenterfield and the surrounding district. All the exhibits have either been donated to or are on permanent loan from past and present residents of Tenterfield and the surrounding district or people who have a connection to the region.
Time Period
The various exhibits date from the earliest time of Tenterfield development (1840’s) to current times. The museum also has a small collection of exhibits from Australia’s first people who occupied the region for many thousands of years prior to colonialism from the early 1800’s on loan to the School of Arts.
Women of Tenterfield
Much is known and written about famous men of Tenterfield but not so much about the achievements of women.
We are endeavouring to change this to provide a balanced view of all who have contributed during their lifetime to the development of Tenterfield and the surrounding district.
Special Thanks
A special thanks is given to all who have donated to the Tenterfield and Districts Historical Society, Centenary Cottage Museum.
We appreciate the people who continue to provide encouragement and support to the efforts of those of us who maintain the collections and to preserve the history of this town and the surrounding district. Without your assistance, our local history would be lost and future generations could only wonder. Thank you.
